Hey, Y’all!
As you’ve heard by now, the election is over.
Politicians on both sides of the aisle make lots of promises and spout a lot of rhetoric. Sadly, that rhetoric includes way too much name calling and a lack of empathy toward their opponents.
I urge all politicians who have won their respective elections to set a positive example and show grace toward their respective opponents.
For the greater good of our nation and society, both sides of the aisle need to treat one another as fellow Americans and not as mortal enemies.
Regardless of the outcome of any election, we, the people, are ultimately responsible for our own actions and for holding every elected official from the highest office to the lowest accountable. At the same time, we must also show grace toward our family, friends, and neighbors regardless of their political leanings.
As John F. Kennedy once said, “Let us not emphasize all on which we differ but all we have in common. Let us consider not what we fear separately but what we share together.”
The Golden Rule says “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”, not “as they do unto you”. Sadly, our political discourse is full of “tit-for-tat” and seeking vengeance against those who oppose us.
Some may say, “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth”. While that may be applicable in a proverbial sense toward punishing wrongdoers, we must not use that as an excuse to exact revenge on those who disagree with us. By doing so, we will only remain divided, angry, and bitter toward one another and our society will indeed collapse.
I leave you with this one final paraphrased quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
“We must learn to live together as (fellow human beings) or perish together as fools.”
Those, my friends, are my thoughts. Please be kind, compassionate, and understanding toward one another and until next time…
