Last Saturday, I took a trip down to Austell, Georgia to meet up with a friend and avid railfan/train photographer Stuart Lodge.
In Austell, two (2) Norfolk Southern rail lines converge, one that goes west from Atlanta to Birmingham and the other north to Rome and Chattanooga. The trains I filmed were running on the latter line.
One thing I’ve learned about railfanning is that it’s kind of like fishing. You need a lot of patience as there may be either a bunch of trains or very few.
Due to most major (Class I) North American railroads adopting a controversial concept called Precision Scheduled Railroading, fewer trains are running. Many (not all, but many) of those that do tend to be about twice as long and use remotely-controlled helper locomotives called DPU’s (Distributed Power Units).
I used my brand new GoPro 11 to film the trains. You can see my results, plus a brief interview with Stuart, on our latest episode of Railfanning With Steve.
While I shot video, Stuart got some great photo ops. Click here to see Stuart’s work for yourself.
