RIP Jimmy Buffett
The man who gave us "Margaritaville", "Fins", and other yacht rock classics passed away yesterday at 76.
According to the Associated Press, legendary singer Jimmy Buffett passed away yesterday at his home at age 76. Cause of death has not been released.
Born in Pascagula, Mississippi and raised in Mobile, Alabama, Buffett created a sound that was uniquely his own. Not quite “country” or “rock”, it was a sound that would be his own unique form of “yacht rock”. His legions of devoted fans were called “Parrottheads”.
In 1977, his signature song “Margaritaville” from the album “Changes In Lattitudes, Changes In Attitudes” peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100. Buffett would later turn “Margaritaville” into a multimillion-dollar business that included hotels, restaurants, and beachfront retirement communities.
In 2003, Buffett teamed with country singer Alan Jackson on the song “It’s 5 O’clock Somewhere”, earning him his first ever music award (CMA Vocal Event of The Year).
We are keeping Buffett’s family in our thoughts and prayers and ask y’all to do the same.
Thank you, Jimmy Buffett, for the music and the opportunity to escape to an island paradise (if only in our minds). May you forever “waste away in Margaritaville” where it’s alway’s 5 o’clock.
